AAA = Abdominal aortic aneurysm

AAAC = The Academic Achievement and Accountability Commission was created by the 1999 Washington State Legislature to provide oversight of the state’s K-12 educational accountability system. The nine-member commission included a teacher, a principal, a school district superintendent, an attorney, an education researcher, three individuals with business backgrounds, and the State Superintendent of Public Instruction. NOTE: With the passage of ESSB 5732 by the Legislature (Chapter 497, Laws of 2005), the Academic Achievement and Accountability (A+) Commission was dissolved and its duties transferred to the State Board of Education. AAADD = Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder, a fictitious acronym taken from an email joke that was widely circulated in 2006-07. A.A.A.D.D. is supposed manifested by the person who goes through the day being visually distracted by environmental stimuli.  At the end of the day the person with AAADD has left behind a trail of started but unfinished projects.  [This webmaster suffers from EOAAADD or early onset age-activated attention deficit disorder.]

AAB = American Academy of Bereavement, a non-profit organization founded in 1993, is a national association devoted to the education, preparation and advancement of bereavement specialists.

AABT = Association for the Advancement of Behavior Therapy

AAC = (1.) Agency Affiliated Counselor: A counselor who is employed by or has an employment offer with an agency or facility that is licensed or certified by the State of Washington.  The agency or facility sets the degree and experience requirements for the job, if any.  No degree, experience, or scope of practice standards are established or required by the State of Washington.  (2.) AAPCSW = American Association for Psychoanalysis in Clinical Social Work, represents the interests of social work psychoanalyists and psycho-analytically informed social workers.  The AAPCSW is affiliated with The Clinical Social Work Federation.

AAPD = American Association of People with Disabilities is the largest national nonprofit cross-disability member organization in the United States, dedicated to ensuring economic self-sufficiency and political empowerment for the more than 56 million Americans with disabilities.

AASCIPSW = American Association of Spinal Cord Injury Psychologists and Social Workers promotes excellence in meeting the behavioral, emotional and psychosocial needs of individuals with spinal cord injury.  In 2005, opened membership to Licensed Professional Counselors and Certified Rehabilitation Counselors who work with persons with spinal cord injuries. ABH = American Board of Hypnotherapy

ABHM = The Association of Behavioral Healthcare Management, the individual membership section of the NCCBH, represents behavioral healthcare executives.

ABHW = Association of Behavioral Health and Wellness-- formerly the American Managed Behavioral Healthcare Association (AMBHA)--is an association of the nation's behavioral health and wellness companies.

ABN = advanced beneficiary notice. (i.e.: a notice placed on the back of a medical form advising that Medicare may not pay for certain tests and that the patient will be responsible for payment.)

ABP = American Board of Psychotherapy  [Thanks to Dr Reuben Gross, New Jersey. I contacted him as one of several persons who listed a Diplomate from the ABP.]   [10/4/05 Michael B. Schwartz, MSW, PhD, Associate Professor of Child Psychiatry (Psychotherapy) at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine writes, "Good luck. It has been many years since I have heard from them and I assume that they are out of business. Please let me know if you are successful." 4/18/06 Dr. Reuben Gross agrees and writes, "I got no response when I wrote to their last known address."] 

My concern about those listing such a credential is (1.) there is no way for a potential client to verify that such an organization ever existed or that they ever issued a certificate to the person claiming it. (2.) that, at this point, anyone could list the honor without fear of challenge. This means people who use it in the future are more likely to be charlatans, and (3.) The Diplomate credential from ABP was issued with an expiration date. The most recent expiration date I have found so far is 1993. So it is not only a past honor, but an expired one.  I have been unable to locate a website, an address or similar information about the ABP--Webmaster.

ABS = 1.) The American Board of Sexology, 2431 Aloma Avenue, Suite 277, Winter Park FL 32792, (407) 645-1641. (2.) Applied Behavioral Science or ABS is sometimes mistakenly used as professional initials or credentials (for example: John Smith, MA, ABS) by graduates of Bastyr University's LIOS Leadership Institute of Seattle--a practice which this counselor/webmaster believes is both unethical and unprofessional.  Certain graduates have persisted in this practice despite Bastyr LIOS repeated requests that they discontinue the practice.  (see also, MA, ABS).

Approval through ACE means that a provider has met rigorous standards, and can provide social workers with high quality learning activities.

ACEP = 1. [NBCC] Approved Continuing Education Provider.  NCCs are allowed to take non-approved continuing education hours for recertification purposes, many prefer to attend or purchase programs that carry NBCC approval.  2.  Association for Comprehensive Energy Psychology.

ACHE = American Council of Hypnotist Examiners is based in Glendale, California, and claims to have 9400 members world-wide, and to be the primary hypnotherapist certifying association in the United States--having the highest educational standards of any hypnosis association in the world, only accepting hypnotherapy schools which satisfy the strict licensing requirements of the California State Council for Private, Postsecondary and Vocational Education.

ACHSA = American Correctional Health Services Association, an affiliate of the American Correctional Association.

ACNP = American College of Nurse Practitioners.

ACP = Address Confidentiality Program [Secretary of State, Washington State] provides crime victims and victims of domestic violence with confidential voter registration so that a perpetrator or stalker can not track them down using voter registration records.  All ACP participants must be referred to the program by a local domestic violence or sexual assault advocate who can help the victim develop a comprehensive safety plan.

ACROM = Asociatiei Consilierilor Romani is a recently founded (2009-2010) professional association intended to represent and support counselors in Romania to promote the transition from counseling as an occupation to counseling as a profession, establishing a legal framework for all counselors, developing and implementing an ethical code and quality standards, and supporting the development of a national certification in counseling. ACS = Approved Clinical Supervisor, a certification of the CCE (the Center for Credentialing & Education, a corporate affiliate of the National Board for Certified Counselors.)  The ACS credential was originally started by the National Board for Counselor Certification (NBCC) in 1997.   In January 2001, the ACS was transitioned to CCE to open the certification to mental health professionals who have obtained licensure or certification in a related discipline. (Under NBCC, only NCCs were able to qualify for the certification.) The ACS credential attests to the educational background, knowledge, skills, and competencies of the approved clinical supervisor.

ADATSA = the Alcohol and Drug Addiction Treatment and Support Act which is a legislative enactment providing state-financed treatment and support to chemically dependent indigent persons in Washington State. (It's not the same, but see also: Drug Court)

ADCA = Alcohol and Other Drugs Council of Australia

ADD = attention deficit disorder--a disorder mainly present in children and adolescents, characterized by learning and behavior problems and inability to pay attention.  [see ADHD, below.]   See also: Adult ADD.

ADEC = Association for Death Education and Counseling,  "The Thanatology Association."  Thanatology defined as,  "The study of death and dying, including the medical, psychological, and sociologic aspects of it.  Each society has its own responses to death and dying. ADHD or AD/HD = attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder ADHD is the term used by the NIMH for people diagnosed with a set of symptoms including inattention, hyperactivity and/or impulsivity, in combination or separately.  While previously ADD and ADHD were used to separate those with hyperactivity and those without, ADHD is now used to describe both types.

ADL (ADLs) = activities of daily living

ADP = average daily population (as in a unit or facility)

AFF = Advance Fee Fraud, known internationally as "4-1-9" 419-fraud after the section of the Nigerian penal code which addresses fraud schemes, are often very creative and innovative. A large number of victims are enticed into believing they have been singled out from the masses to share in multi-million dollar windfall profits for doing absolutely nothing. Victims are most often contacted by email.

AHP or AHPs = Association Health Plans, 2005 proposed legislation that would allow small businesses to band together through associations and purchase healthcare for workers and their families.  AMHCA opposes this legislation because these plans would be exempt from state laws, including those mandating mental health benefits, mandatory reimbursement laws, vendership laws, and other laws to protect patients.  [The Advocate, January 2005, a publication of AMHCA.]

AHT = America's HealthTogether, a non-profit organization whose mission is to build national support for affordable health--and mental health--for all and to eliminate health care disparities and inequities.

AIA = an alcohol impact area. A defined area where it is illegal to sell beer or malt products with an alcohol content more than 5.7 percent and a cost of 4 cents or less per wholesale ounce.  It is an attempt to decrease concentration of drunks in an area by restricting the availability of strong cheap alcoholic beverages including fortified wines (Tacoma & Seattle, Washington)

AICT = American Institute for Cognitive Therapy, a New York clinic founded in 1985 as the Center for Cognitive Therapy (CCT).

AIDS = acquired immunodeficiency syndrome

AIHCP = American Institute of Health Care Professionals, Inc. AIRS = Alliance of Information and Referral Systems, incorporated in 1973, is the professional association for over 1,000 public and private community information and referral (I&R) providers. Comprehensive and specialized I&R programs are found in nearly every community and operate as a critical component of the health and human service delivery system, primarily in the United States and Canada.

APSCC = Association for Pastoral and Spiritual Care and Counselling, a division of the BACP that aims to improve the quality of pastoral care and counselling in the United Kingdom, lay and ordained, voluntary and paid: e.g. clergy and ministers, social workers, doctors, therapists, nurses, Christians, Jews, other religions and non-committed, and to raise standards in the teaching and exercise of pastoral care and counselling.

APSP = Association for Psychoanalytic Self Psychology

APS = 1.  American Pain Society   2.  American Psychological Society 3.  Australian Psychological Society, 4. Arno Profile System, explained as a counseling tool that helps counselors to "identify counselees' problems faster and more accurately."

APSAC = American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children

ARC =   1. Application Review Committee, ICF Credentialing Program   2. Applied Research Center Organized to study of the practice of community organizing and perform research into the issues around which organizers were mounting campaigns, especially the identity concerns of people of color, gays and lesbians, and women.

ARCA = American Rehabilitation Counseling Association, a division of the American Counseling Association.

ArMHCA = Arkansas Mental Health Counselors Association

ARND = alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder.   Term used when signs of brain damage appear following fetal alcohol exposure, but in the absence of other indication of FAS.  (See FAS)

ARNP = Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner Requires advanced diagnostic training and often has authority to write and monitor prescriptions.

ART = (1.) Aggression Replacement Training® trademark issued to Barry Glick, co-author of "Aggression Replacement Training: A Comprehensive Intervention for Aggressive Youth." ARY = "At-Risk Youth," as defined by Washington State law. 

AS = Asperger Syndrome (See: ASPIRES, below.) This diagnosis is eliminated in the DSM-5, and becomes "a mild version of autism."

ASAM = American Society of Addiction Medicine, but ASAM criteria is a phrase used to refer to a set of patient placement criteria (PPC) written by ASAM and used to move a person through on a continuum of care from assessment through treatment and to discharge in a prescribed and consistent fashion. ASCA  = American School Counselor Association, a division of the American Counseling Association.

ASCD = Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development

ASD = autism spectrum disorder refers to a broad definition of autism including the classical form of the disorder as well as closely related disabilities that share many of the core characteristics--Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Rett's syndrome, Asperger syndrome and Childhood Disintegrative Disorder. ASERVIC = Association for Spiritual, Ethical and Religious Values in Counseling, a division of the American Counseling Association.

ASGPP = American Society of Group Psychotherapy and Psychodrama, founded in 1942 by J. L. Moreno, MD, it is the pioneer membership organization in group psychotherapy. 

ASGW = Association for Specialists in Group Work, a division of the American Counseling Association.

ASOTP = The Affiliate Sex Offender Treatment Provider has passed the initial test and now needs to complete 2000 hours of supervised clinical practice to become a SOTP. [Good luck on finding a web link on this one.  The Washington State Department of Health changes their URLs frequently and without notice.]

ASPE = American Society of Professional Education

ASPIRES = Asperger Syndrome Partners & Individuals Resources, Encouragement & Support.

ASPPB = Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards in the United States and Canada (Lost tract of website in 2008, and unable to locate any current information about the organization.)

ASTT = Advocates for Survivors of Torture and Trauma is a group of physicians, psychologists, social workers and human rights advocates who have come together to find ways to help survivors of torture and trauma.

ASU = Adjudicative Services Unit is responsible for the content of the Washington State Department of Health " Provider Credentials Look-up System" information. They track disciplinary timelines in compliance with a Washington State legislative mandate, as well as comply with a federal mandate for reporting all disciplinary actions taken against Health Care Providers to the National Healthcare Integrity Protection Databank. ASWB = Association of Social Work Boards

ATCB = Art Therapy Credentials Board  grants registration (ATR) after reviewing documentation of completion of graduate education and postgraduate supervised experience. The Registered Art Therapist (ATR) who successfully passes the written examination administered by the ATCB is qualified as Board Certified (ATR-BC), a credential requiring maintenance through continuing education.

ATA = American Translators Association

ATE = Association of Teacher Educations

ATLAS = Apparently this is not an acronym but is the name of a UNESCO (World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations) surveillance initiative that maps international mental health resources such as the availability of providers and services.  Eventually, an ATLAS publication will allow individuals to identify the number of counsellors available in relation to specific populations, the existence of policies for credentialing counsellors, and descriptions of work carried out by counsellors in each responding country. Initial data collection and writing efforts will be done by NBCC-I and is expected to begin by the end of 2005.  [Thanks to "The National Certified Counselor" Vol. 21, No.3, Fall 2005, a publication of the National Board for Certified Counselors.]

ATOD-C = Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs, Certified. The certification title is being revised. By the end of 2000, persons holding the ATOD certification will be notified and have certificates that say C-CATODSW. [Thanks to Susan B. ATODC = Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug – Certified. This is a specialty certification of the National Association of Social Workers.  (see C-CATODSW)

ATP = Association for Transpersonal Psychology

ATR = Art Therapist Registered or Registered Art Therapist.

ATR-BC = Art Therapist Registered-Board Certified. (see ATCB)

ATRL = means a person registered as an Art Therapist who is granted a license to practice psychotherapy. [Wisconsin]

ATSA = Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers is an international organization focused specifically on the prevention of sexual abuse through effective management of sex offenders.

ATSDR = the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry is the principal federal public health agency involved with hazardous waste issues.

ATSS = Association for Traumatic Stress Specialists

AUCC = Association for University and College Counselling, a division of the BACP that promotes student counselling as an integral part of the educational process of Institutions of Further and Higher Education in the United Kingdom.

AUDIT = Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test, was developed by the World Health Organization to screen for harmful or hazardous drinking patterns.

AVRT = Addictive Voice Recognition Technique

AWAKE = The Association of Wisconsin Area Kodaly Educators [part of OAKE] 

AWARE = Associates for World Action in Rehabilitation and Education 

AWP = "any willing provider" laws require health-maintenance organizations and other insurers to accept into their networks all...providers that agree to the insurer's terms of service--as opposed to limited panels of providers. --State law upheld in US Supreme Court case, Kentucky Association of Health Plans v. AYP = Adequate Yearly Progress, refers to the measure of school performance as measured by testing of students under the federal funding bill referred to as "No Child Left Behind."
