Ellen M Rugg, MA, MSW, LICSW, PLLC

Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW)

I provide online counseling sessions using Doxy.me. Telephone sessions also available.

I've been practicing for decades now, and love my work as much as when I started. When beginning with a new client, my first priority is to create a safe, nonjudgemental space where anything can be comfortably discussed. In time, our relationship itself will become an agent of change. My style is warm and interactive, and often I'm considered easy to talk to. I have a deep respect for the strengths that you'll be bringing to our work, and will help you to build on them in order to achieve your goals— whether your goals are personal, professional, or relationship-related. Some reasons people pursue therapy include: to deepen self-awareness, to enhance coping skills, to work through loss, to move through life transitions, and to change behaviors standing in the way of greater life enjoyment.

I work with individuals and groups. Problems I've been helpful with include: exploring and enhancing relationships, learning to use one's voice effectively and assertively, changing boundaries with family/friends, increasing self-confidence, working through life transitions, and issues of importance to women. I love helping people to explore how family-of-origin messages have shaped them, and then helping them to decide whether out-dated beliefs could be holding them back. Therapy involves learning more about yourself, and then deciding whether you want to make changes based on that new information. It can be very powerful to learn to respond differently to a situation, or person, in your life. I'm a life-long learner, and regularly seek advanced clinical training. I also seek regular consultation from other seasoned psychotherapists. I am also a Certified Clinical Supervisor, and enjoy supervising psychotherapy associates who are seeking licensure.

I'm a strong believer in the power of group work. I currently facilitate three Women's Supportive Therapy Groups. Participating in group provides a wonderful opportunity to experience the wisdom, caring & camaraderie of other women. My role is to maintain a safe frame, and to bring women together who can be good learning partners for each other. Often things will come up in group that don't come up in individual therapy, and insights and changes will crystallize due to feedback and observations of supportive group members. Making changes within a women's group can be a powerful experience. For many members, group becomes a touchstone and important part of the week. If you feel that you & I may be a "good fit" for individual or group work, feel free to contact me~
