Pathways Counseling

Dianne Mallory

Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC)

My focus of practice is with adults. Choosing a therapist can be a daunting process. You may not have considered this but therapy will be a type of relationship. We put our trust in a stranger as we discuss our pain, frustration, embarrassing (to you) topics, shame about your behavior towards someone, anger, hate, feelings of failure and so on. One of the reason therapy works is because I am a stranger; I don't have an emotional attachment to your issues and I can be objective about what you share. That's not to say I am detached. I am involved and I do care very much. Clients may feel stuck, struggling to get through problems that are overwhelming or unresolved issues. A few examples are: relationship problems, aftermath of divorce, unrelenting depression & anxiety, grief & loss (a death or loss of a long-term relationship), the process of "coming out" to family and/or friends, work issues or job loss, communication, an ill loved one. I use several methods to work with clients but mainly use humanistic therapy. The theory is based on the belief that people have a natural inclination to strive toward self-fulfillment and understanding. The goal is to get a sense of individualism or self-actualization. This means that you learn what works best for who you are rather than what others told you to do, how to behave growing up or live life according to what others decided for you. It may help for you to explore what roles play out it your life that create disharmony for you.

I find my clients usually develop a better understanding of self, they have more self-awareness. they are kinder to their self, not being so self-critical. They may feel more freedom to be who they are. Many pursue a different path according to their choices such as a different career or going to school. They find more joy can better determine what they really want or desire. Some take up an old hobby or a new one. I find that people who make the most progress depending on what the issues are of course and those who really commit to the process rather than look for quick answers. The attend therapy regularly and consistently approach or face the issues they are working on.
