Susan Traff

Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC)

Individual, couples and family therapy. The orientation of my practice is to help individuals and couples relate to each other and be in the world more authentically. I draw from a variety of sources including but not limited to existentialism, transpersonal and humanistic psychology along with my own personal work to meet the clients where they are and help further them along the transformational path. We work organically together in relationship, dealing with life as it shows up in the room. Anxiety, depression, intimacy, lack of relationship and relationship issues are all addressed. Lifestyle issues are brought out relating to how people live sexually, spiritually, monetarily, in relationship to work and home, health and free time. We usually don't get through this life without suffering; sexual, physical and/or emotional trauma is processed and worked with along the way. Because of my background as a Certified Nutritionist, I also deal with eating disorders of all types; weight maintenance and health are addressed when appropriate.

Struggling couples and individuals unsuccessfully seeking intimacy and a healthy relationship. A life partnership is a path to self understanding. When working from this stance we can understand better our own work. We all know how awful our partners are from time to time, but we know less about our own annoying ways. I start off telling partners that they are right about each other, "now study yourself and what your partner is telling you and stop focusing on the hope that your partner changes". If you do your work in relationship you gain wisdom and continue to grow and change, if your partner does the same you have a gold mine and this is what I help people to see. However, you have to remember you only have control over your own change, so this shift away from your partner back to yourself is essential, learning to live with the uncertainty of the other is part of the learning along the path.
