Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW)

My approach to counseling is based on my belief that leading a meaningful life includes the experience of all life's challenges. People gain strength from different sources, primarily from healthy relationships and the practice of thoughts and activities that are enriching to their lives. I am deeply committed to helping others learn how to find meaning, peace and enrichment in their lives. The way that I do that is based on education, research and experience, but is primarily led by the person (or people) I am meeting with. I don't believe that most people require years of counseling services. Instead I focus on what's called "brief solution-focused therapy", helping people to quickly organize their thoughts, evaluate their challenges and utilize their strengths to reframe difficult thoughts, make changes that they wish to see in their lives and to improve relationships with others. I rely on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing and Family Systems Theory to facilitate progress and empower those I work with to continue their journey without continued therapy. I believe that the key to success in counseling is a strong relationship between you and your counselor, as the process requires a safe, trauma-informed, non-judgemental space for honest work. Your privacy is of the utmost importance to me. You cannot change your past, but you have incredible influence over your future and I am passionate about helping you make it the best that it can be.

My specialization is in hospital social work. That said, hospital social work includes all the variety you could wish for! It is primarily crisis intervention and stabilization, or adjustment and transition work, but really has given me the opportunity to meet with people and families in all imaginable (and unimaginable) situations, coping with issues both extreme and subtle in nature. If you are new to the field of healthcare then you have seen what a task it is to gain all necessary knowledge and integrate social work skills into the setting. That is my specialty. My continued education is as diverse as my experience, and I can discuss it in more detail if your would like. I have completed mental health evaluations on children as young as 6 years old and as old as 106 years. I have worked with parents to support the emotional well-being of premature babies and children who are hospitalized for extended periods of time. The bulk of counseling work I have done has been with parents involved with Children's Protective Services and with adults undergoing treatment for Cancer.

I am currently available for ONLINE COUNSELING throughout Washington State and in-person counseling on Whidbey Island. I offer in-home visits when it is necessary to facilitate the best therapeutic outcomes. By using secure online video conferencing thru WECOUNSEL, I am able to offer services to individuals and families who otherwise have a difficult time accessing services, or keeping appointments. The success of online counseling is now well documented and the standards for its use well defined. If you feel this would be helpful to you, please feel free to call or visit my website for more information. Consultation is always free. If I, or my services are not a good match I will help you to locate a provider/service that is a good match.
