Carl Tippins

Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC)

Recently someone asked me what the most important quality is in finding the right psychotherapist. I immediately thought, well you want someone who is experienced, solid in their practice, has really good training and is available at exactly the right time and right place for you. Someone who works with your insurance company. With more thought I came back to my own experiences, what you want is someone you can have the right relationship with- a professional relationship that allows you to learn about yourself and to make sense out of some pieces of life that are out of sync, distorted, disturbing- be that a relationship, or an addiction, or depression- things that take you out of your connection with you and with others. The relational experience that you have with the therapist can make a huge difference in the outcome of your experience. I work really well with those who I can really work well with. Kind of stupid thing to say but its true and if you want to get the most out of therapy, than take the time to find a therapist who you can really work with- it works better that way. It is okay to take your time and find the right therapist, don't settle you deserve better than that. -I may not be the right therapist for you, I have been for many people over the past 30 years but not for everyone. Let's take a couple of sessions to see if this fits. Call me.

I work with men and women, both in groups,in couples and individually. My doctoral dissertation was on The Father Wound, the ways we get wounded and hurt from the lack of fathering or abusive fathering that we get. I spent over 15 years exploring father wounds, Men's Issues, and how those things pertain to both men and women. After my dissertation and doctoral degree was completed in 1996 I became interested in the teaching, theory and works of Melanie Klein, the founder of British Object Relations. In a nut shell you could say that this work is all about mothering and the wounds from the relationship or lack of relationship with the mother. I work with women and men on father issues, mother issues, and relational challenges. In my studies over the 30 years of practice, I have worked with people recovering from addictions, alcohol, drugs, sex, gambling, relationships- and have used psychodynamic processes along with very pragmatic approaches to dealing with depression, grief, loss, anxiety, and marriage/ divorce. I use many tools but most of all I practice relating, listening, considering and taking in who you are...

I am much closer to the end of my career than the beginning, which means I am more selective about who I work with and in what capacity. This is both good and bad, good in the sense that if we choose to work with each other, than it is mutual, not so good in that I do not always want to work with everyone who comes to see me. The first 2-6 sessions are times for us to consider if we are a good fit or not. I don't work on weekends, holidays, middle of the night, or via phone or skype. I work with many insurance companies and am centrally located. My hope is that you will take the time to consider if I might offer the kind of therapy you are needing and if so to call me and we can see what fits from there. My retired therapist friend Stan often said, "Re-member yourself for a change."
