Typically, my clients are individuals who want help with improving their relationships and managing stress. Many want help with recovery issues related to their own or a loved one's alcoholism, drug addiction or eating disorder. Often my clients participate in a 12-step program, but also want additional support in working through emotional pain related to depression, anxiety, anger, or in coping with the lingering effects of a difficult or traumatic past. I see counseling as a collaborative process. In counseling I am actively involved in working with you, providing information, guidance and support. I primarily use cognitive-behavioral therapy, which focuses on the relationship between your thinking, emotions, and behavior. This approach often involves helping you change attitudes and behaviors that are causing emotional pain. We may talk about how you've handled difficulties in current (or past) situations and relationships. Counseling may involve helping you identify, develop and implement more effective strategies for problem-solving. It may also involve helping you identify, develop, and implement healthy coping strategies for problems in your life that cannot be solved.
