I am certified in the equine-assisted therapy mode EAGALA. EAGALA does not involve any riding, the horse is an equal partner and everyone is on the same level. EAGALA is client centered, solution focused and uses motivational interviewing. EAGALA has been around for 20 years and has been researched for longer. Equine-assisted therapy is benificial for many issues but EAGALA is especially suited for trama and anxiety because it doe not involve steps for learning, it is a treatment where the therapist 'holds space' for the client to choose where to direct the session and goals.
EAGALA requires a mental health specialist and a equine specialist. The equine specialist helps with equine behavor interpretation. Horses are prey animals and they each have a role in the herd reflecting to the herd what signals are being sent so the herd can remain on alert status. The client becomes accepted into the herd and the horses begin reflecting the signals they pick up from the client. Because the horses can be so large (miniture horses can be used), it is hard to ignore the reflections and easy to put them into metaphores for theraputic work.
Equine-assisted therapy is unique because it is conducted outdoors in fields where other wildlife are present. Equine-assisted therapy can be holistic and anything that the client focuses on in the setting is assimulated into the clients story.
