Sarah Sherrell

Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC)

I provide online counseling sessions using Doxy.me, Zoom. Telephone sessions also available.

I work with young adults who are experiencing anxiety, depression, or recovering from the impact of religious abuse. A global pandemic and the continued impacts of climate change has stirred a lot of uncertainty for folks, and I'm here to sit with you in that uncertainty. I believe we all need deep listeners in our life who help us to listen deeply to ourselves. That's what I offer for you in therapy sessions - a chance for you to slow down and hear your own thoughts and feelings. Together we listen to where it hurts, we listen to your deep needs and desires, and we collaborate in imagining new coping skills that help you attend to your specific needs and desires.

I am most passionate about working with folks who are recovering from religious trauma and abuse. Healing from any sort of religious or spiritual trauma is incredibly complex. Our bodies hold a lot of tension and fatigue, both during and after a faith deconstruction. I see this tension stemming from a few different areas. If we were emotionally, physically, or sexually unsafe in our past faith community, much of this tension comes from constantly remaining hypervigilant to our surroundings. There were likely major betrayals of trust or boundary violations with authroity figures in your past faith community. If not betrayals of personal trust, you may have been grappling with the systemic issues of your faith community - and this particular disillusionment with institutions is often accompanied with a lot of anger. There is typically an increase in symptoms of depression as well, often due to the isolation that takes place when leaving a faith community. It's possible that some friendships or partnerships remain in tact, but more often than not there are significant relational losses. This period of grief can last for a long time, and I'm here to support you in your grieving process. There is certainly a spectrum of experience when it comes to the impact of religious trauma - but whether your experience holds more anxiety, depression, or anger, I am here to offer deep listeing and understanding.

I am currently offering remote therapy sessions to any Washington state residents. I used a HIPAA compliant video platform called Doxy to meet with clients for video sessions. I am also able to accomodate phone sessions when needed. I am not paneled with any insurance company at this time; clients pay for sessions out-of-pocket in the amount of $115. I can provide a superbill each month that can be used to submit for possible partial reimbursement with your insurance company; I recommend contacting them in advance to confirm your deductible and reimbursement reates for out-of-network therapists.
