My passion is to help parents develop a more positive and rewarding relationship with their children. You and I will begin by looking at your child’s behavior compared to typical behavior of other children of similar gender and age. Then we'll look at your child’s environment and life circumstances. I will help you understand how these factors may impact his or her behavior and how that behavior affects your parenting. One of my goals is to give you on-going information, support, and new strategies as we work through this process. Occasionally, we may see behaviors that need more intense intervention, and together we may decide on a referral for a comprehensive evaluation or a practitioner for your child. Our goal will be to bring peace to your home and to make your life with your child more satisfying for both of you.
My dedication to working with parents and children stems from my Ph.D. program in Child Development. I learned so much about children's development and what adults can do to support them at each stage. Understanding what is happening in your child's life developmentally is key to working with the challenges you are facing. Specific strategies will or will not work at certain ages. Your parenting techniques may derive from your experiences growing up, and what seems a natural or normal response to a child's behavior may not be in the child's or your best interest. Consequently, my counseling practice has specialized in parenting and child behavior issues since 1993. In addition to counseling, I have served as a consultant on child development in a number of capacities. For nearly 20 years, ending in 2012, I traveled throughout the United States and Canada, teaching parents and teachers about effective strategies for working with children. In 2001, I was recognized as Outstanding National Educator by the Bureau of Education and Research. Locally, I have taught parenting classes for a variety of hospital, school, and church groups and taught parenting education through Shoreline Community College for 35 years, retiring in 2017. My book on parenting, Mentor Manager, Mentor Parent: How To Develop Responsible People and Build Successful Relationships at Work and at Home, co-authored with Linda Culp Dowling, was published in 2002. It has been my honor throughout all aspects of my career to enrich the growth and development of children by supporting the adults in their lives. It would be my distinct pleasure to join with you on your parenting journey.
I look forward to working with you via telehealth or in person in my office in Woodinville. Generally, I will not need to see your child; things usually get much better with new parenting strategies. Sometimes, though, you and I will decide together for me to see your child for one or more sessions. In working with co-parents or blended families, often I will initially see the parents and children separately. It is helpful for each side to express their feelings and thoughts without argumentative or defensive rebuttals. By first letting each side be heard and by giving each side new relational skills, coming together to talk as a family goes much smoother.
