I counsel individuals and groups who want to work on difficult relationships and intimacy problems; isolation; physical, emotional, and sexual abuse; depression and anxiety; theological matters; grief; and life transitions. Because many problems are rooted in relational issues, I look at the nature of the client's current and historical relationships, focusing on how relational style interferes with experiencing a meaningful life. As we work together, we look at integrity (facing denied reality), freedom (shedding the unnecessary constraints we put on ourselves), and responsibility (seeing ourselves as people who can choose and have an impact for good in our world). I also lead groups on deepening relationships, recovering from sexual abuse, and writing therapeutically.

Typically my clients and I will approach current issues by looking at the historical context for them. So often the harmful ways we relate come from behaviors we learned to help us survive our childhoods. (For example, a sensitive, shy child might learn to be invisible at school so as not to attract the attention of bullies. And the bully learned to be tough and aggressive because he or she felt so powerless and belittled at home.) But now these behaviors keep us from being free and being able to fully give and receive love. They keep us from deeply connecting with others. Through looking with compassion at the stories that shaped us, we can find more freedom to embrace life and others.

I also use EMDR to address trauma or looped or stuck thinking.
