I work primarily with individuals who are on a spiritual path; who are experiencing difficulties in their everyday life; and who want to work with these difficulties in a way that increases their contact with being. Often the first step is to recognize how harsh we are with ourselves by noticing what the inner critic is saying almost all of the time. As we learn to develop compassion for ourselves, our trust grows, the body tends to relax more, and often it will allow us to see and feel what was just under the surface. In addition to using various energy techniques such as tapping, breath work, and movement to reduce painful feelings, I help clients get comfortable in their own bodies and teach them to stay present with what is occurring. Through doing this, it becomes possible to recognize that it is often a very young part of ourselves that is triggered when we are uncomfortable. We can learn to recognize when this is occurring and learn how to bring in more space and capacity to support ourselves.
By focusing on the felt sensations in the body, it is possible to make contact with the emotions and feelings that we normally keep hidden from ourselves by feeling numb, going into the head, or using a spiritual bypass. The stories that we tell about ourselves tend to stay the same and that makes it hard for talk-therapy to change deep-seated issues. By focusing on body sensations, we are brought into the present moment where change and the unknown can occur. We are able to deal with deeply buried past issues as they are showing up in the present moment. This often leads to spontaneous understanding, relaxation, and some connection with our depths. I view all of our issues as a way the body/spirit is seeking balance and wholeness. In my experience I see that spiritual practice tends to bring the undeveloped facets of our personality into painful awarenesss, so that we can no longer ignore them. As we do the psychological work to understand and heal ourselves, we tend to get lighter and make more contact with the qualities of our true nature.
My orientation comes from over 37 years of meditation using eastern methods and 17 years as an on-going student in the Diamond Approach, which pioneers the use of modern techniques of psychology with the ancient wisdom traditions.
