Human Trafficking

What Is Human Trafficking?

"Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery. This crime occurs when a trafficker uses force, fraud or coercion to control another person for the purpose of engaging in commercial sex acts or soliciting labor or services against his/her will. Force, fraud, or coercion need not be present if the individual engaging in commercial sex is under 18 years of age.”

“Human trafficking takes place in every region of the world: Human beings are sold, bought and traded much like objects.  Victims of trafficking end up in the hands of traffickers because they are being deceived, being forced or abducted.”—United Nations Commissioner for Refugees

“The U.S. State Department estimates in the U.S. each year 600,000 to 800,000 men, women and children are trafficked across international borders—and the trade is growing. Polaris, which operates a national human trafficking hotline, state that 22,326 victims and survivors called them in w2019, a 20 percent increase from 2018.

Recognize and Report Human Trafficking.

Sex Trafficking:
Anyone selling sex who is under 18 is legally a trafficking victim. There are a number of racial myths and stereotypes associated with sex trafficking. While available evidence shows that racial minorities are more likely to be victims of sex trafficking, there is no truth behind the stereotype that certain races of men are more likely to be traffickers than men of other races.

Myth: Only women and girls can be victims and survivors of sex trafficking.

Recognizing the signs of Labor Trafficking
“Labor trafficking is the crime of using force, fraud or coercion to induce another individual to work or provide service. Common types include agriculture, domestic work, restaurants, cleaning services, and carnivals.

Myth; All human trafficking involves sex.”
