A new study has proven what generations of immigrants have known, said Jeff Jacoby. Learning English is “the most valuable skill immigrants can acquire” after arriving in the U.S. The study of 800 immigrants of various national origins, by the Economic Mobility Corp., found that those who took the government-subsidized English classes made up to $7,100 more per year than those who did not, and that their subsequent earnings grew at a faster rate. Speaking “America’s common tongue” also means “inclusion in the rich panoply of American life,” including culture, entertainment, sports and politics. A Pew Research poll found that 90 percent of U.S. residents of all ethnicities and races agree that “to be truly American,” people need to be able to speak English.
During every wave of immigration going back to the 18th century, there has been fear that the U.S. would be taken over by non-English speakers. But contrary to what some people believe, immigrants today “acquire proficiency in English faster than they did a century ago,” And their children and grandchildren often speak it exclusively. We don’t need a law establishing English as our national language because “it always has been, and it seem safe to assume it always will be.”
