I am a general practitioner with vast experience with depression, anxiety, ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), sexual abuse and emotional trauma recovery. I also work extensively with pain and habit control. I specialize in relationship problems, including difficult parenting challenges and couples and marriage counseling & coaching and infertility issues. My coaching practice specializes in relationships, parenting challenges, ADD/ADHD, and people going through life-transitions. Coaching occurs primarily on the phone and with email and offers more flexibility frequency of contact than in-office counseling. It is appropriate for people who do not have a mental health diagnosis and who are seeking a particular goal (tho it may not yet be well-formed) and who are action-oriented.Coaching is not covered by insurance. Counseling techniques include hypnosis, solution-focused therapy, cognitive therapy, emotionally-focused and communications orientations. Children, adolescents, adults, couples & families. I am on the panels of most insurance companies.
I have been working with couples, both heterosexual and gay, for dozens of years. I am widely known locally and many people consider me to be excellent in persistently helping couples to improve the quality of their relationships through much more than merely improving communication. I have been trained by Virginia Satir, Salvadore Minuchin, John Gottman, and most recently Terrence Real. I have extensive experience and training in the Relational Living model and will soon be fully certified in this very active and directive model of achieving "Full Respect Living". Since most relationships enter into counseling long after there have been problems, the process of achieving a great relationship takes time, commitment and persistent effort to change aspects of relating. My goal is not to help partners "get along"; that is too low of a bar. I want you to have a GREAT relationship. After all, marriage or other form of life long commitment is the only relationship we really CHOOSE and to settle for less than GREAT is indeed settling. That's not good enough for me and probably isn't for you either.
Because I am well known and have an excellent reputation my practices are busy, though not necessarily full. I have hours in Tacoma on Mondays and Tuesdays and in Renton on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Insurance coverage requires face to face encounters and a mental health diagnosis. Even insurance companies which exclude marriage counseling will still cover an initial session and often will cover "family therapy" when there is a "patient" with a diagnosis. Coaching has no such limitations and although not a covered insurance benefit, it allows more flexibility in how and when to meet and in offering total confidentiality. My coaching practice is particularly useful for ADD and for people going through transitions, especially young adults just entering or leaving college or leaving home.
