Lakeside School, an independent 5-12 coeducational day school located in North Seattle is currently recruiting for a middle school long term substitute personal development teacher (.75 FTE) beginning January 6, 2020 and continuing until June 12, 2020. Responsibilities
The aim of the Lakeside Middle School Personal Development Program is to provide students with the knowledge and skills to live a healthy and rewarding life in middle school and beyond. To achieve this aim, our curriculum works to empower students to understand themselves, make intentional values-based decisions, practice healthy behaviors, and positively engage with others in their local and global communities. Our curriculum focuses on the following key elements as necessary components of a healthy life. • Identity • Identity and Community • Healthy Peer Relationships • Emotional Health • Brain development • Body (puberty) • Mindfulness

This position reports to the Middle School Personal Development Department Head and will join a highly collaborative department. Specific responsibilities for this position include: 

  1. Teach six sections of Personal Development, each section meeting once every three days;
  2. Participate in the work of the Personal Development department on innovative curriculum development, pedagogy, and assessment;
  3. Serve as a co-advisor for a group of students and participate in grade level activities, such as service-learning, field trips, or outdoor trips;
  4. Provide academic support for students outside of class time as needed; and
  5. Attend department, grade level, and faculty meetings and participate in the life of the school.

 

Qualification Requirements:

 

Requirements and Qualifications

  1. Candidates should have teaching experience, preferably with students in middle school or early high school. In addition, they should have a strong understanding of and appreciation for adolescent social, physical, and emotional growth, brain development, appropriate decision making, personal responsibility and social justice.
  2. Must be able to interact with preadolescents and adolescents in a way that encourages thoughtful reflection and open, honest dialogue about sensitive and personal issues; demonstrates the ability to successfully interact with diverse individuals and groups; exercises good judgment; and effectively collaborates with colleagues.
  3. Demonstrated cultural awareness, including knowledge of themselves and the cultural lenses they bring to interactions. The candidate will understand different perspectives; interact respectfully with cultures other than their own; and cultivate meaningful relationships with people that have different cultural frameworks.
  4. Satisfactorily complete two criminal background checks.
  5. Strong organizational skills and a sense of humor are essential.
  6. A MEd, MA, MC, MSW or higher degree is preferred but not essential for this position.
  7. Local resident of the greater Seattle metropolitan area.
